Cork win McGrath Cup.

Cork 1-15 Clare 1-9

Cork claimed their eight McGrath cup and their first trophy under Peadar Healy with a fine win over Clare in Mallow last night.

Clare started well and got the first goal of the game from Eoin Cleary and traded point for point with Cork in the early stages. Even after Hurley goaled for Cork on 14 minutes to put the Rebels 1-03 to 0-02 ahead Clare had an immediate response with an Eoin Cleary punched goal. However from then on the scores dried up for Clare.

In the last 15 minutes of the opening half Cork outscored Clare 0-7 to 0-1. In fact it could have been worse for Clare except for their keeper saving a Collins shot and Dan McEoin hiting the post. They went in at the break Cork 1-10 to Clare’s 1-04.

Clare started strongly in the second half and had cut the gap to four points after 53 minutes. Then O Driscoll, who started at corner back but pushed up the field following the sweeper Clare played, got his third point of the game to push it back out to five.

A crucial save from Ken O Halloran denied Cleary at one end only for Cork to score a point from Paul Kerrigan on the break to stretch their lead. Further scores from Hurley and Seamus Hickey put the seal on Cork’s third McGrath cup in fire years.
